Back in 1995, Mr. Gino Ouellet founded a business called BSL Wood Products Inc. whose main function was the second and third transformation of softwood products. Thanks to the company’s dedication to environmental stewardship and the pioneering vision of its owner, despite modest beginnings, BSL Wood Products quickly became an industry leader. The introduction of the US duty on Canadian softwood lumber was a critical determinant for the future of this growing business and in 1999, convinced that it could do things differently and offer one-of-a-kind products; BSL Wood Products began manufacturing hardwood flooring. Since then, the growth of BSL Wood Products has been fast and furious. In 2000, the company further expanded its operation and built a plant to produce and varnish pre-finished floor planks. This was a bold move for the company. BSL Wood Products utilizes many parts of the tree, not just the sapwood, and offers a unique line of hardwood floors that are both distinctive and naturally beautiful. With the BSL line of hardwood floors, the mid-sized eastern Canadian company succeeded in creating a highly respected niche for itself on international markets. To meet the ever growing demand for its products, management strived to expand production while focusing on refining its methods of quality control. Over the years, BSL Wood Products continued its steady growth. In August 2004, a sixth plant was inaugurated. Located in Matane (Quebec), this plant represented an investment of more than 6 million dollars and brought the total number of employee for the BSL Hardwood Products Group (from 5 in 1995) to over 280 today. Bois BSL Matane is where Signature BSL flooring is made. A marvel of high technology, this division produces the company’s highest quality line of flooring, complementing the BSL line of products to perfection. Finally, in 2006, the company introduced its Bois BSL Energy Division. This brand new mill, worth over 3 million dollars, consolidates the company’s vision for the future and safeguard of the environment. SmartLog is the first product the company creates according to its eco-friendly principles. SmartLog is a high performance log made of 100% natural hardwood residues. It does not contain any chemical additives or paraffin and is 100% organic. It does not pollute or foster creosote build-up in chimneys.
